This just makes me think they're going to draft a WR fairly early on this year's draft.

With or without this news I think we should expect BUF to invest in the WR position fairly high in this draft. Other than Watkins they have absolutely nothing at the position. So much so that veteran cast off Andre Holmes is being looked at as the potential WR2 for the team. Watkins aside, BUF has one of the worst WR groups in the league.

This reminds me of the Alshon Jeffery scenario.

The Bears wanted him to prove he could be healthy before paying him; ironically, he couldn't prove he could be healthy and productive, so they let him walk.

I imagine that they will ultimately pick up his 5th year option - but if an extension comes beyond that is a completely different story.

So Jeffery got suspended and that is the same as being hurt?
They sent about 2 targets less per game his way last season than any other so they impacted his production more than the games he missed.

The bills are picking up Watkins option imo. They paid 2 firsts to grab him so letting him walk shouldn't even be in the realm of reality. Now maybe they are going to try and get a cheaper deal going long term extension + the 5th yr or trade him for an early 1st this year but those are really the only 2 options I see as reasonable for them

the possibility exists that after the bills organization has basically neutered whaley in advance of terminating him or allowing him to walk
(not sure of contract status) that some of his mistakes could go away with as well just to clean the decks of some of his hands. Although for most there is little doubt watkins possesses elite tools if he is unreliable due to health then he may be allowed to walk or traded away. Should buffalo draft a wr at 10 then the writing is on the wall likely.

I mean it could be the best case for Watkins career for the Bills to not pick up his option and let him test the market. I don't think picking up his option or not affects his dynasty value but maybe I am wrong.
I just imagine he could pick a spot with a much better QB and more favorable conditions for a passing game than BUF

They're seemingly cleaning house like the Eagles did with Chip. I think it's shortsighted. He's probably the best pure talent on their team. If he balls this year they would need to franchise him in order to keep him, which is much more than what his 5th year salary comes out to. They made some good moves during the draft, and followed up with removing Whaley, but this is dumb. As an owner in multiple leagues I'll be pulling for him to play with a big chip on his shoulder this year.

The front office is dysfunctional which is why they just cleaned house with their GM and scouting department. One would have thought with that out of the way they would have exercised the 5th year. This is a HUGE mistake by that organization.
