Poor sportsmanship or just gamesmanship

I am very surprised at the reaction by two or three other owners in a league where this occurred:

On Monday morning I see that heading into Monday Night Football, I am trailing 205-210 (IDP league). My opponent and I each have one player yet to play. I notice that he has a BYE week TE in his lineup and Mychal Rivera (OAK) is sitting on waivers. I saw Rivera had one decent game this season and could be a viable option for my opponent in what is sure to be a nail-biter.

Am I being rightfully called a poor sport for scooping up Rivera on Monday morning to block my opponent from a chance at scoring extra points? Or is this just gamesmanship? I called them a bunch of Sallies for suggesting it was a dirty move.

If he had gone all week without picking up an available TE off waivers when he had an empty spot in his lineup, that is his fault. People are so pathetic nowadays. What has happened to society and especially men? Waivers are free game, that's the point of it.

He could have picked up a TE at any point.

That's just ridiculous, how dare you pick up a player someone else wanted! How could you do that!?!? Don't you know he belongs to who ever see me him first?


But really, it's ridiculous this is even a problem. If the guy doesn't pick someone up its his own damn fault. Tbh, I think it would be wrong for you to NOT pick him up.

As long as you didn't pick him up and drop him immediately I think you're fine; that's a low-ball move in my opinion. You executed sportsmanship perfectly.

I think thats completely reasonable. No different to bidding on a player you have no intention of playing earlier in the week. Picking guys up off waivers is part intention to play them yourself, part stopping opponent from playing them against you.

I tend to be a little more conservative about these things, but given what you have described I think this is an absolutely legitimate move since your opponent had plenty of opportunity to pick him up ahead of time.

Gamesmanship. If it had been several TE that you successively added/dropped/locked then I'd have you over the line.

it seems to me he needs to keep track of his team better if he waited all that time and still didnt pick up a startable TE.

I call it good work, call it gamesmanship, whatever, but thats on your opponent.

whos to say, absent your picking up Rivera, that your opponent who to that point had not done anythying to start a TE would all of the sudden act, and pick up Rivera. Im sure Anderson and possibly Griffen were available as well?

Poor planning on his part. I've been on the other side where I waited to pick someone up if the game is close, but made sure there were a couple options in case ANYONE picked them up.

I see no problem with this. He took a gamble by waiting this long to get that TE. But, in so doing, he also gained an extra roster spot for a few days because he didn't need to roster that TE.
