My college application journey

Postby seahawks506 » Tue Oct 18, 2011 10:08 pm

Hey guys,

If you don't know, I'm in my senior year of high school. It's been almost one year since I joined this great site, and now I'm taking the next step applying to colleges. Just thought I'd keep all of my DLF buddies in the loop. Here's my list:

Duke (Top Choice)
U of Chicago
Cornell
UPenn
Northwestern
USC
Cal Berkeley
UCLA
Michigan
U of Washington
New York University

I want to be a Blue Devil really badly. Man, acceptance rates these days are minuscule though (top Ivy leagues are like 7% acceptance).

Fingers crossed!

Good luck with your college search, some great looking colleges on your list there for sure
Best advice is to try to visit the places on the top of your list, and be sure to go where you feel comfortable, and not necessarily which college we think has the best name recognition. Be sure to keep everyone posted on this thread and good luck

Is your major Engineering Davis? Cornell is the ivy league of engineering programs. I applied back when I was looking to transfer schools, got turned away haha. Purdue is a really good option for engineering degrees as well.

Thanks Shawn, I visited UPenn and the campus was gorgeous.. great food trucks there too. I don't know that I 'd be an Eagles fan though.. :) Visiting Duke in a couple of weeks too.

Engineering majors have great starting salaries but I'm not that into it, I'm probably majoring in economics/business- Duke has extremely good Investment Banking placement so I'd hope to be in that before getting an MBA.

I'm a Purdue Alum, and they do have some top notch Engineering degrees. But if you're interested in Business, Purdue also has Krannert School of Management, which is a great business school. I don't know how it compares to Duke, but I hear good things.

Good luck to you.

My best friend's top choice is UVA/ Vanderbilt and mine is Duke.. would be funny if that happened to us haha. Yeah, I'd definitely be one of those camping in K-ville for basketball tickets, if for nothing other than being part of it!

Good luck bro!!!

I mean, I dont know much about all the college stuff outside of college football, but why not try it with Harvard or Yale? :) Accademically they seem to be at a pretty high level. Are they really that good compared to other colleges? I guess its pretty hard to get in there :)

I'm not a big fan of the ivy leagues, many of the people are rich, snobby, east-coast prep school kids. With that said, Harvard Yale Princeton, etc. acceptance rate is also ridiculously low, at ~7%... and that number is inflated by recruited athletes, minority students, legacy (parents went there), and sons/daughters of big donors/ famous people. Duke is hovering dangerously close to the single digits too, and it's been pretty much ranked next to or above many ivy league schools historically (although I'm not a slave to college rankings like way too many people in the US are!).
