One of the biggest debates whenever you get to music is who is the best band / singer. And it gets even tougher when you get genre specific. And that is if you can even 'label' a band with one genre.

Well one genre that is always fun to discuss is 'Metal' which is one of my favorite genres to listen to. And one of the bands that I have come to feel is quite deserving of 'Best Metal Band' is none other than Iron Maiden. I love Black Sabbath and highly enjoy Metallica, amongst others (those are probably 2 of the names most would argue belong in the discussion) but for sheer staying power it is hard to beat Iron Maiden.

Anyways this week I am going to pay tribute to Iron Maiden, and choose 1 song from each of the decades (70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s & 2010s) of their existence. And I am sure I will share more Iron Maiden down the road - I have just been trying to share an eclectic taste of how awesome music is by touching on a lot of different genres.

Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden

Some might say - wait what? Wasnt the first Iron Maiden CD out in 1980? Yes. However the first official Iron Maiden recordings released were in 1979 - the Soundhouse Tapes which had been recorded in 1978. So I have shared both Iron Maiden versions, the 70s EP version and the barely 1980s LP version.

Seventh Son of a Seventh Son - Iron Maiden

The 1980s was Iron Maidens original "hey day" and when many think of Iron Maiden they think of The Number of the Beast or Hallowed Be Thy Name (two of my favorites) but I feel that their 'concept' album was underrated and this song in particular is just ... wow

The Angel & The Gambler - Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden has had 3 lead vocalists - since they started recording - Bruce Dickenson (current), Paul Di'Anno & Blaze Bayley. Of the 3 Bayley is probably held in the 'least regard' but I think he was (during the Iron maiden time) a competent singer that did a good job - even if not ultimately the right 'fit'. I think this (despite the repetitive chorus) and Futureal are good examples of what Bayley brought to the table and helped keep Iron Maiden avoid the dark periods that bands like Black Sabbath went through - guitar solo awesome also.
