2nd year QB Values

Postby blemly » Fri Apr 19, 2019 10:48 am

Hey guys,

Curious as to how people currently value the 2018 class of quarterbacks in superflex/2QB leagues. I'm new to superflex, which means I've recently had to learn how QBs are valued in these leagues and wanted some feed back on whether these values were close as their situations currently stand.

1. Mayfield = 3 1sts+. Given that he is considered a T5 QB overall right now in SF dynasty leagues, his price is certainly the steepest of the 2018 QB class. I don't know if I'm paying that price, but he falls in line behind Mahomes, Luck, and Watson in terms of value.

2. Darnold = 1 high 1st + 1 late 1st. Darnold experienced growing pains that one might expect a rookie QB to experience, but, given the depth of talent around him, didn't have a poor year. I think his value hasn't gone up or down too much, but it is promising that the Jets have added talent around him and I am excited about his outlook going forward.

3. Jackson = 1 high 1st. I personally don't value Jackson quite as high as Darnold, but understand that others may disagree with that. His value lies almost exclusively in his running ability, but if he can develop his accuracy he could be a very good quarterback. I would potentially pay more than a high first, but just in the form of a depth prospect where the buyer had a need.

4. Allen = 1 high to 1 mid 1st. His value to me seems very close to Jackson's, but I'll give Jackson the nod over him since I like the situation in Baltimore slightly more. Both have the same positives and negatives about their game, but I could see Allen ending up better than Jackson down the road when it comes to passing accuracy.

5. Rosen = 1 late first to early 2nd. Given the uncertainties, I think paying a 1st right now might be a slight overpay. His offense didn't help him any, but he didn't look ready to start last year by any means. If I owned him I would probably hold him.

Thoughts?

I'm not as high on Jackson or Allen, but I agree that Mayfield is in my top tier of QBs with Mahomes, Luck, and Wilson, and that Darnold should be worth around the 1.01.

Overall, I think that you're too low on acquisition cost. Most of these QBs were targeted by the person who drafted them last year. And none of these QBs (save Rosen) disappointed. And all (again, save Rosen) would likely be a top-2 pick this year.

If someone is looking to cash out on a 2nd-year QB, then they'll be looking to make a measurable profit over where they were drafted last year. Most of these offers are, at best, equivalent to their draft value last year.

Good to know. I'm still figuring out exactly how to pinpoint these values.

For all the QBs last year, I'm not shipping more than a first for anyone but Baker.

Darnold still plays for the Jets, and while their acquisition of Bell is a positive sign...it's still the Jets.

Allen, the guy's passing stats were no better than Rosen's but everyone seems to forget that due to his rushing ability...which is fine I guess, since Blake Bortles was a league winning QB for 2 seasons.

Jackson, all this news coming out about him working on his accuracy, etc...not sure I'm buying it.

Rosen, no one's probably trading for him at this point. And those who own him aren't selling him for less than a 1st round pick. Dependent on what happens tonight, Rosen could remain a starter or go be a backup for an aging Vet.

It looks like you have a pretty good grip on QB values in a superflex. The biggest mistakes newbies make in superflex leagues is undervaluing QBs. It's better to error on the side of overvaluing young elite QBs that project to exceed for years to come.

I gave 1.08 for Rosen and 2.09. I don't love this class and rolled the dice about 2 weeks before the draft. I feel better about him in Miami than any other QB in this class except Murray.
