Rookie Draft in Transitional League

Postby tyzee15 » Sun Jun 17, 2018 12:03 pm

Our league has decided to transition to a Superflex league. The increased roster spots have taken affect but the SF roster spot won't take affect until the 2019 season. This gives us a 2 rookie drafts ('18 & '19) and a whole season to prepare our rosters for the change. With this being the case, would you treat this year's rookie draft as a SF draft, just give QBs a slight bump, or treat it as a non-SF draft?

Thanks!

i feel like you would treat it like any other year. Focus on BPA keeping in mind: if you are competing now, RBs and WRs may help, if you are trying to rebuild, the QBs might be the longer play, especially if they get pushed later into the draft.
Too many teams and lineup changes to keep track of them all.

I'd treat it closer to SF than standard.

1) Rookie QBs usually take a couple of years to hit their stride anyway. So, you draft a rookie QB usually looking a couple of years ahead.

2) I'm guessing that many will still look at this draft in a more standard way. You can scoop up TONS of future QB value right now. I'd have no objection to taking 3-4QBs if they keep falling.

I'm facing something similar...here's been my thinking:

Stats seem to bear out that if you have the option to start 2 QBs, you will want to do that most weeks. I guess it depends on how the scoring in your league is setup and how many teams there are to say for sure. But most QB13-24 (assuming a 12 team league), will likely outscore most WR3/4/5 or RB3/4/5

So that said, you want to make sure you at least have a 2nd QB can start (imo)...so if you have a decent bench QB, you can just use him, and then look for a backup via trade/wire at your leisure, if you're so inclined. If you don't have a viable 2nd QB, you need to figure out how to get one...groom one thru the next draft is one way. Making a trade or scooping one up asap off the wire is another. Expect the QB values for trade/wire to immediately jump.

There are a lot of QBs in this year's draft, so it's tempting to use a pick on one...for 1QB leagues, I was expecting these guys to go late 2nd/early 3rd in the rookie draft...but for leagues with a superflex coming in the next year or two, I wouldn't be surprised to see them start going early 2nd now.

Definitely treat it like a SF draft this year. One thing that remains almost universally true is that QB values go up between year 1 and year 2. Consider Trubisky, Mahomes, etc from last year's SF drafts to this season. Value is way up. It will definitely happen with this year's class.
If you can't leave at least a 20% tip, you can't afford to eat out.

In similar situation. I treated it more like SF but we had a keep 3 qb limit to start this coming season, keep 4 next year with no limit afterward. That devalued the qb's a little

Here are the top 5 QB results for my 12 team rookie draft basically on the same exact timeline for transition:

1.10 - Baker Mayfield
2.01 - Lamar Jackson
2.04 - Josh Rosen
2.08 - Josh Allen
2.10 - Sam Darnold

The team at 1.10 that broke the seal was actually a rebuilding team that had traded down, 2.01 was a strong veteran team that traded up, 2.04 and 2.08 were rebuilding teams and 2.10 was a strong team. I say all this just to illustrate that I think most of the competitive teams treated it like a standard league since that's the way we'll play this year, where the rebuilding teams were more focused on preparing for the transition.

This is a small sample size and this is a home league with a lot of guys that aren't really diehard so take this for what it's worth.
