Update 5: (nearly through 14) SF Startup Draft In Progress

Postby BucFanJKE » Tue May 15, 2018 7:10 am

Hey guys! I'm doing a 12 team superflex startup currently (my first ever superflex league or startup draft). I wanted to share the results because ongoing drafts helped me out to figure out some ADPs.

Scoring: 0.5 PPR (1 PPR for TEs) plus some other small bonuses for first downs and big games.

I believe everyone in the league is on these forums. Would be cool for guys to explain why they went which way (or not for those who like to keep things more secret) as the picks roll in

Also, not sure this link will work for people not in this league, but it's the live draft results- https://www.fantrax.com/newui/fantasy/d ... IVE_ONLINE

I'm FoFM (Fist of First Men) above. I traded my 1.10 pick to get the 2.4, 4.4, and 6.4 trying to get some better depth with our bigger starting lineups. We'll see if that works out. I was utterly torn, but the RBs I was looking at I was hoping one would survive until my 3.3 pick so I decided to go the double QB start at 2.3 and 2.4 without a first with Aaron Rodgers and Deshaun Watson. Unfortunately, it didn't elicit a QB rush and I saw my Fournette, Cook, and Gordon all go shortly after. Was maybe hoping too much for one of those to be left at 3.3 anyways, so now will have to hunt what to do

Barkley at 4 was surprising to me, as was DJ making it to the start of the 2nd round. Also, Taco's team is scaring me right now. ROCK is interesting with the RBs Barkley, Bell, and Cook off the bat

Me-
2.3 Aaron Rodgers, QB
2.4 Desean Watson, QB
Team 1- 10 team ppr, 1QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1TE, 2Flx, 1D, 1K
2022: 1-8
Finishes: 6th, 6th, 1st, 5th, 6th, 9th

TE: Hockenson, F Monroe, Juwan, Musgrave
D/K: Patriots, Vikings, Saints, Dicker

picks-
2024- 1,1,1,1,2,2,2,3,3,4,5,5
2025 1,1,1,2,3,4,5

team 2- 12 team SF, .5PPR, .5TE boost, 1QB, 1SF, 2 RB, 3WR, 1TE, 2Flex
2022: 8-1
Finishes: 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd :wall:

I would have gone Rodgers at 2.01. Having a team with Rodgers, Wentz, and OBJ would be an amazing start.

Honestly. It was my plan from the start. My initial plan was to get Nuk/OBJ/Gurley leftovers, and get two of Wentz/Wilson/Rodgers. Then when DJ made it all the way down to 13 (I had him ranked somewhere in the 6-7 area) I changed my play and grabbed him. I may beat myself up over it later.

I guess depending what other QB you're able to get later, it might work out for you. It just would have been tough for me to pass up on two stud QBs and the top dynasty WR to build around.

I ended up getting Mahomes in the late third and Dak a few picks later. Maybe going with 3 qbs this early was a mistake, but I really wanted 3 guys I could feel good about. I can wait on RBs and WRs and find someone capable, but QBs are much harder to find. Below I break down why I went with who I did.

I am really high on Mahomes. I just think he is in the perfect situation. He got to sit last year behind Alex Smith. He has a good offensive minded coach. And he has a ton of weapons at his disposal. I probably reached on him, but when I selected him I had in mind to get him and Dak, and I thought Dak had a greater probability of sliding down (due to his sophomore slump last year).

As for Dak, I'm not super high on him, but it was between Dak, Luck, Mariota, Winston and Cousins for me. Looking a little bit deeper than the fact that it seems like Dak has no weapons I found out he really wasn't that bad last year with the ghost of Dez Bryant and no running game. Witten leaving is a slightly bigger deal, but I have enough faith in Jerry Jones to make sure that Dak has weapons.

I was really tempted to grab Luck, but I just couldn't justify the risk when there were safer quarterbacks with high potential. Mariota worries me with his injury concerns, and while I think he takes a step forward this season, I see him as lesser to Dak currently. I love me some Winston (as a Bucs fan I have to) but he is wildly inconsistent and his picks will lose some weeks (and this league has another penalty for pick 6s). I do love his potential and I think he was really good last year when he wasn't hurt. And Cousins is just meh. I think he will be okay, but he was the last one I mentioned for a reason.

Re: Update 1: (thru 3rd round) SF Startup Draft In Progress

Postby hockeyBjj » Thu May 17, 2018 8:42 am

So this draft for me is not at all going the way I envisioned. I was planning on going RB heavy, as I think the point per first down may put scoring layout for this more like a standard league than ppr (really not sure, excited to find out) but after 6 picks in the top 40, my only RB is a rookie in Guice

Next pick after the two QBs I took back to back in the first round was trading up, despite telling myself not to and let my strategy for the enhanced depth with deeper starting lineups play out. I live in Wi and wanted a piece of D Adams especially paired with my Rodgers, and the price wasn't too steep. Paid 4.4 and 5.10 and got 2.12 and an 8th back (which is still an every week starter).

Really needed to go RB with next pick, but the guys available in Mixon, D Freeman, D Henry, and Jordan Howard I realized I would take the 1.2 over all of them (by a hair in Mixon's case) in a league that was underway, so I bit the bullet and took the guy I would have taken at 1.2. Tyreek Hill was still there at 3.10, and I had debated him at the 2.12 spot, so I had to go there even if it meant doubling up on WRs when I had intended on doubling RBs early

Now at 4.3 , I was looking at the wrong side of a dropoff of RB talent and a very flat area of WRs who we all pretty equal. So I decided to get a difference maker a the thin position in Zach Ertz at TE with a .5 ppr boost (TE 1ppr, rest .5). Pretty happy with getting 5 players in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, even if it meant losing my other 4th and only 5th (so now I have to wait until 6.3 which I may regret.

My team-

2.3 Aaron Rodgers, QB
2.4 Desean Watson, QB
2.12 Davante Adams, WR
3.3 Derrius Guice, RB
3.10 Tyreek Hill, WR
4.3 Zach Ertz, PHI

I'd kind of enjoy seeing a couple teams here completely ignore the QB position just to see how it plays out.

I couldn't do Mahomes as the 7th QB off the board or Jimmy G 5th. I understand they're the "QBs of the future", but man, you could get other "QBs of the future" for a fraction of the cost later in the draft. I'll venture to guess that the biggest values will be found in the 7th and 8th rounds of this draft with the way it's playing out.

It's really surprising me how slow they're coming off the board. Looks barely more than 1 QB league with 6 point TDs and maybe some other boosts

I've still got my eye on my "value" QB I want to take as my QB3, but think he's still safe for now whereas I did expect to have to grab him around this point

Yeah, it was probably a slight reach, but I think he is a QB1 starting now and for the forseeable future. Not having an extra pick after 4.1 until the 6th round worried me a bit, so I took him earlier than he may have went otherwise because I felt pretty good about Wentz, Mahomes, and Dak (or one of the others available had I missed him) as top three.

Definitely understand the reason for grabbing him where you did based on your picks left. That trio should give you a solid rotation for this year, and if you like him, get him.

I'd agree; I've seen them come off the board earlier than they did, but it looks like they're picking up steam now. This is actually why I love trading into the 4th-8th area of Superflex drafts...tons of rookie QBs whose values will rise next year. Solid vets...I mean Stafford is on the board still. I know you didn't ask for advice, but can you imagine trading down from Watson's draft spot earlier and adding Stafford and AJ Green?

Posted an update through the 5th.

It was quiet for me as I didn't have a pick between my 4.1 and my 6.1. Finally added another guy and went with Rojo. Lots of talented receivers left on the board, but I ended up deciding to go with a running back here. After I determined I would go RB, I was mostly debating between Penny and Rojo at this spot. Ultimately I went with Rojo due to my Bucs bias and getting to watch him every week.

Team at this point

QB- Wentz, Mahomes, Dak
RB- DJ, Rojo
WR- OBJ
TE- none

Not drafting again until the 10th unless I trade up for something. I'll probably post the next update after the 7th round.

Postby hockeyBjj » Mon May 21, 2018 12:57 pm

Oh man. Watching the 5th round without a pick was freaking painful. So many good guys there. Adams better be freaking worth it

Had two picks in the 6th. Thankfully, the two guys I'd had my eye on since Jameis Winston went were still there. Debated Mayfield for the upside as I'm drinking the Browns Kool-Aid with how their roster looks on paper, but took Matty Ice as my QB3 at 6.3 to be a reliable bye week, horrendous matchup for GB or HOU, and all out every week option if Watson goes the way of RG3

6.4, I was still in a position where I would trade any of the skill players away for pick 1.3 in a regular league, so I went the guy I'd take at 1.3 in Penny. My team has two rookie RBs and I'm crossing my fingers

Probably need to do something about my WR situation soon as we start 4.... and a flex... Only 1 pick in rounds 7-9 so I'll have to swing and hit rounds 10-15

My team-
2.3 Aaron Rodgers, QB
2.4 Desean Watson, QB
2.12 Davante Adams, WR
3.3 Derrius Guice, RB
3.10 Tyreek Hill, WR
4.3 Zach Ertz, TE
6.3 Matt Ryan, QB
6.4 Rashaad Penny, RB

5 players in first 3 rounds, 8 players in first 6. I'm ok with this, but still missing an RB3, WR3-4, and flex and only with 1 pick in the next 35 selections so hoping being week at these deeper starting positions doesn't hurt me too much

Trying now to get back into the 8th for my 19 first while the WRs are more than simply shots in the dark
