QB strategy in a superflex

Postby georgetown » Sat Mar 17, 2018 5:00 am

Team 2 is my superflex team and it’s only going to be my 3rd year of playing in this format.

I have 1.01 and will take Barkley but at 1.07 I know I’ll have a chance to draft one of the rookie QBs. But with Newton and Winston as my QBs, would the better strategy be to take the next best RB or WR or get a 3rd QB on my roster?

Still trying to figure out what would be best bc it seems like it’s better to have postional depth than it is to have QB depth bc two years ago the team that won only had Bortles as his only QB.

I'm a huge advocate on trading down qbs like they were draft picks. For example I would be trying to trade Newton off to a believer for an underrated qb like rivers, Carr, mariota, tyrod and then grab additional picks or players on top. Check out the completed trades topic for examples of possible combos.

Also this years draft class at qb looked amazing before free agency but now it looks like most if not all and will sit a year, which will be great for them but kinda lowers their immediate value for me.

^^^^^^
Would't bet against whoever the Bills, Jets, and (if the get lucky) the Cardinals take at QB. All 3 are iffy.

I would make it this simple...rank your players, qbs included given your format. If your highest ranked player when it is your turn to pick at 7 is a QB then take them. I also do NOT care if a player is going to sit a year, especially a QB. In fact in your situation you don't need the QB because of Newton/Winston so you can let them develop and get the opportunity.

Players give you value in one of two ways:

1) In your line-up; or
2) To trade

Those are the only ways that they give you value. There is usually a strong correlation between the two: the players most likely to be in your lineup are the ones who are most likely to have trade value, and the players with the most trade value are often the ones most likely to be in your lineup.

Since you can get value from the best players in either of those two ways, simply take the best player. That's a long way of saying that you should seek out the player most likely to give you a return in one or both of those ways. Even if you had Rodgers, Wilson, Winston, and Watson on your team, I'd still take a QB at #7 if he were the best player.

If you have Newton and Winston on your team already, and if you take a QB with the 1.01 instead of Barkley, you're nuts. Take Barkley at 1.01 and the best available QB at 1.07. And if all the top 4 QB's go between 1.02 and 1.06, which won't happen, then you take the best WR or the 2nd best RB, and go to battle with Newton and Winston. This is a no-brainer.
