2013 vs 2014 WRs

Postby Kierke » Mon Dec 23, 2013 9:26 am

Having gone through almost an entire season now, where do you rank the top 5 or so 2014 wrs (Watkins, Evans, Lee, Benjamin, Robinson ect.) with the current 2013 Rookies (Allen, Patterson, Austin, Hopkins)?

For me it's something like:

1. Keenan Allen
2. Sammy Watkins
3. Marqise Lee
4. Mike Evans
5. Deandre Hopkins
6. Cordarrelle Patterson
7. Kelvin Benjamin
8. Allen Robinson
9. Tavon Austin

Where do you guys have them?

I'm still holding out hope for Austin. I think some guys make the transition to the NFL easier than others. So with that said my top 6 (at this time) are below.

1. Sammy Watkins
2. Keenan Allen
3. Marquise Lee
4. Mike Evans
5. Cordarrelle Patterson
6. Tavon Austin

** However, I would like to note that should Marquise Lee return to form, similar to that of his 2012 season, I'd probably list him #1. His 2012 highlights were the most impressive of all I've seen of the above IMO.

S.Watkins
C.Patterson
M.Lee
J.Mathews
K.Allen
M.Evans
D.Hopkins
B.Coleman
Q.Patton
R.Woods

CP84 is special to be his size and move like that in the open field is insane. Once he gets the route tree down and someone competent throwing him the ball it's over. Like Allen just think he's a good player he ended up in SD where WR core is bad and took starting job. I think situation he fell in to was great and he is good enuff to take advantage of it. I know a lot are going to look at Q.Patton with a weird eye, he was just my guy loved him at LA Tech.

This may sound crazy but I'm just going to put it out there...
I would not trade Patterson for the 2014 1.01. Conversely, I would trade my 2014 1.01 for Patterson. That's how much I believe already.

That's interesting, I've heard a lot of people say that Watkins is a more polished version of Patterson

Appreciate you asking...I've been thinking about this quite a bit lately.
First off, I feel it's harder to stop larger, more physically imposing dudes. Watkins is not as big as I would like if I'm projecting him as my team's future WR1.
Moving on, the polish factor is an owner preference/decision.
You could justifiably see that as Watkins being ahead of Patterson on the learning curve. That is, I think, widely accepted as fact and not anything I would dispute.
Look at it another way and it might indicate that Patterson has a larger opportunity in front of him to improve.
If today Watkins is 80% polished and Patterson is 40% polished who are you more excited to see at 100% polished: Watkins at 125% of today or Patterson at 250% of today?
Framed that way I'll take Patterson every time and not look back, even though he is undeniably riskier. It may be batsh*t crazy, but I've talked myself into it.

To me, this actually sounds like a good comparisson of Patterson and Allen. Allen has had a more solid year but Patterson definitely has a lot more room to grow. I'm extremely impressed with his athleticism but it looks like he really needs to improve on his catching. If he can learn to catch a deep ball in coverage he could be on the Dez tier.

Dez's rookie year: 45 catches, 561 yards, 6 TD's and some flashy punt/KO returns.
Patterson: 43 catches, 438 yards, 3 TD's, and some flashy retuns. Add in 104 rushing yards and 2 rush TD's with one game still left to go and they're pretty even.

Both also have one 1 100+ yard receving game.

QB's: ARod, Rivers, Sanchez, Manziel, Mallett, Mettenberger

Imo, Watkins is just a small notch below a A.J. Green / Julio Jones type of prospect. He should be the 1.01 pick in nearly every 2014 dynasty league rookie draft.

To wit, in a league where I acquired the 2014 1.01 pick through a trade in 2012, and my WR corp already consists of Julio Jones, Keenan Allen, DeSean Jackson, Alshon Jeffery, Jordy Nelson, Michael Crabtree, Kendall Wright, Marvin Jones and Jarrett Boykin, and where my RB, QB, and TE depth is shaky at best, I won't think twice about using that 1.01 pick on Watkins.

Interesting take. Watkins will only garner more momentum as he lights up the combine.
