Higgins

Postby startstopping » Thu Aug 13, 2015 10:48 am

Just starting to look into the 2016 class. Why is higgins so low on the DLF Devy Rankings (10th WR)?

Is this just a statement about how good the class is, or does he have major deficiencies? He seems like he needs to add a ton of weight, and he is not on draft breakdown yet so i have not seen 1 snap of his. But.....

Looking at his stats its hard to see how he is the 10th WR in the class. As a true freshman he put up really good numbers, and as a sophmore his stats were straight out of a video game. Are his numbers greatly inflated by something else? Whats his deal?

I think people are now leery because McElwain and his offense are gone. Also Higgins is small and people usually favor huge receivers

I don't really think he's one of those go up and get it type players. He relies on screens and crossing patterns to rack up YAC (which he's really good at). Maybe the concern is when he gets to the next level, he won't be able to outrun, juke NFL DBs. People probably think he has a lack of upside as well which in devy leagues is huge. But I agree with Sugar Ray Jose in that his stats are bound to regress with all the changes happening which might hurt his stock. Guessing he's in the 3rd round range of the real NFL draft.

Great points made already in this thread.

Should be an interesting year for Higgins based on the reason's stated. Hopefully he bulks up a little coming into this year or gains more speed. He needs a little more of either or both to break that top 10. But man did he have a great year last season, led the nation in yards, 1750 yds 17 TDs and 9 consecutive 100+ yd games? Definitely worth keeping tabs on.

Just a quick thought... But I highly doubt that Boyd will measure 6'2" at the combine. He looks tiny for a guy that size... Ever seen that picture with him standing (in cleats) next to Larry Fitzgerald (who's just under 6'3")? https://twitter.com/gopittfootball/stat ... 5003097088.

What is a little misleading about that photo is Boyd is actually behind Fitz with Fitz closer to the camera. The height difference looks a lot more than it is.

My point was two-fold. First, Higgins is not "small". Sure he needs to add some more weight but that is much easier to do than growing taller. Second, Higgins and Boyd are at least listed as the exact same size but no one has called Boyd small nor had much concern about his height or weight and Boyd was drafted within the first 4 picks in my Devy drafts last year. Pro Football Focus has Higgins rated the #1 WR in college football.

Sure hope you're right. In my only devy league, I took him and Treadwell at 1.01 and 1.02. Not that height has much to do with skills, but his value could sure take a hit if he comes in at 5'11"...

But, don't get me wrong, I fully understood your point. I was just throwing that out there about Boyd potentially getting the ol' Pitt Boost. Ha..

I definitely see Boyd play bigger than Higgins. Boyd has more of a my ball mentality from what I've seen but it could be just because I haven't seen Higgins do it. Doesn't mean he can't. It's just most of his highlights he's running down the field wide open or on a screen.

I get the impression that Higgins isn't ready today to get off the LOS against physical NFL press-man coverage. Too slight, and not explosive enough in short areas to back off aggressive coverage.

If he figures that out, or is lined up consistently off the LOS, he's good enough in other areas to be a WR3-4 type that warrants flex consideration during bye weeks.

I don't see a ready-made fantasy football difference maker, but there's a hint of promise that's worth monitoring. I think I saw him read coverage on the fly and break off his routes (hard to say without knowing the play call). That's promising for his future utility in the NFL if he irons out some technique flaws.

I definitely agree, DynoScout. When I turned on his tape I was expecting to find out what all the rave was about but I was a little let down. He seems like nothing more than a Justin Hardy type from last year. I'm not going after him any earlier than around 2.6
