As you can see, the opening bid didn't include a contract length because it was less than $5 per year. Had it ended for $4, the winning bidder would get to choose if he wanted a one or two year contract. When the auction went to $5, the bidder had to include years and could offer up to a three year contract.

After the bid went to $12 - 3 years, the next bidder could go down to $10 but had to add a year to the contract offer ($10 - 4 years). Remember, every year in a contract offer is worth $3 (per season). Also, once we reached $10, we could offer up to a five year contract.

Then, the other bidder went to $13 - 3 years because the bidder didn't want to commit to a four year deal (with a $11 - 4 year contract offer) and the auction couldn't return to a bid it had already been at.
