2018 Rule Proposals

Postby TrueDawg » Mon Jun 04, 2018 10:06 am

So there was no dedicated thread last year for proposed changes for 2018... but some were posted in the 2017 thread. I've tried to compile them here.

Please add anything you'd like to discuss.

Jim proposed:

We need to include years in our bidding. We tried doing this a few years ago, but nobody wanted to vote for it.

Jim proposed:

We should expand the off season roster to 21.

I proposed:

We need to figure out some way to curb QB scoring, even if it's done incrementally over a couple years. I'm sorry but Jay Cutler and Trevor Siemian shouldn't outscore Antonio Brown. They just shouldn't. Cuz, ya know...they're TRASH.

Trash can QB2s shouldn't outscore the best WR in the league.

Yes, QBs only score 4 points for a TD...good QBs also throw 20+ TDs a year. When was the last time a RB or WR scored more than 20? Don't know? I'll tell you. EIGHT players since 2000 (and TWENTY in NFL history) have scored more than 20 TDs in a season. The last one was Randy Moss in 2007 (23 TDs). SEVENTEEN QBs threw 20+ TDs last SEASON. That's the whole reason passing touchdowns are scored lower in the first place. Plus, QBs get 6 points for rushing TDs, which gives some QBs a little extra value.

Related to the above:

Passing yardage scored at 20/point instead of 25 (or higher)/point is the biggest scoring issue with QBs. In decades of fantasy football, I don't think I've ever seen that in another league, and passing yardage now is a hell of a lot "easier" to compile than ever before.

Last year:

4000+ yards passing: 13 QBs (Brees had over 5k, and Ryan and Cousins were within striking distance)
3000+ yards passing: 25 QBs
Only two teams came up short of 3000+: Rams and 49ers.

That's a huge shift, even from 2006...

4000+ yard passing: 5 QBs (Brees was the highest that year too, with 4418...almost 800 yards less than last year)
3000+ yards passing: 14 QB
Ten teams came up short of 3000+.

The top 10 last year, averaged more than Brees lead the league with in '06.

Absolutely no one is suggesting QBs shouldn't be the highest scoring position, but QB scoring is out of wack.

Again, I'm going to propose getting rid of kickers and defenses

MS proposed:

I know I'll get shot down, but I REALLY hate the rookie contract structure. It's probably still better than the raw old way, but it can be so prohibitive to future roster flexibility. I'm not suggesting we get rid of penalties for whiffing on high draft picks, but maybe there are some alternatives.

I posted this, which is really just something to be explicitly stated in the current rule:

Speaking of the rookie contract structure... technically, when the 4 years of their contract are up, they have no more "guaranteed" money left. But I think if the 5th year option is picked up, it should also be fully guaranteed...meaning the bonus would again be equal to the salary.

MS proposed this:

Very minor change but allow drops all week. Couple times I've gone to do it after waivers but before 9am ET, and can't process on MFL. Forgot to come back and actually make the cut this time.

citsalp proposed:

Add compensatory picks to teams who lose a player in Free Agency. Just come up with a salary structure. I lose a player for a 20k bid that I originally invested 5k in I get a second, at the end of the second round. Food for thought.

Cause there are some really crazy contracts out there...

Monkeybones proposed:

Since the WC is determined using total points all of the "non championship" playoff seeding should be done using total points.

I thought that was a given. Otherwise, 5th year players could be given a "bonus" to lower their effective salary to be less than it was for years 1-4.

I wouldn't be opposed to "extending" the draft beyond round 3, even if just with "optional picks" with far more contract restrictions, but adding "comp picks" seems like far too much burden for their benefit.

I'm thinking 4 pts for td's should stay the same. Maybe make INT's -3 points and 1 pt for every 25 yards passing?
