2018 Rule Change Vote: DS Demotion

Should we change the deadline for demoting players to the DS to 48 hours after the end of the draft?

The rules currently say:

Placing a player on the developmental squad is an off-season activity. Players may not be placed on the developmental squad once the regular season begins.

This change would more clearly define when DS designation must take place.

I think it's easier to have DS designation mimic the FA period. We have to assign contracts within 48 hours so why not make the DS designation fit the same restrictions?

Like I wrote in the other thread, am I missing something?

A fixed date is fine but 48 hours after the draft? Why so early? What if your mid-late round pick blows up in camp and you want to promote him? You get punished with a higher salary because of this arbitrary date?

The current process is arbitrary. The commissioner sets a random date near the start of the season and that's the date we use to move a player to the DS. This is in line with players added through FA.

I get it if people like the ability to sit on players through the preseason. I prefer having to make a decision on the DS just like when a player is added through FA.

But the DS is different than adding a player through FA. Having more information before making this decision is a good thing and I don't see any reason to force people to make it within 48 hours of the draft. There comes a point in the offseason, whether it's Sept. 1st or whatever, where we have to have our rosters set for the regular season (just like NFL teams)... this is silly.

I vote no.
