2019 DE/DT rookies

Postby Pullo Vision » Fri Jan 25, 2019 7:56 am

One of the strengths of this draft is the defensive line. Seeing mocks of multiple linemen going top 5/10.

Thoughts n the incoming DL rookies? Which ones are great talents, which ones are more dependent on scheme/role? Seen multiple comments Nick Bosa is better than his brother coming in to the league.

Bosa should be an absolute stud, yes. Hopefully he goes to a 4-3 team although Joey was listed as a DE even when the Chargers ran a 3-4, as they are both big tweener ends.

Josh Allen, Brian Burns, Jachai Polite, and Clelin Ferrell should all be attractive IDP picks if they go to 4-3 systems. Montez Sweat as well, although he is probably a hair below them talent-wise.

For interior DLs: Quinnen Williams should be a top 5 pick and is potentially the best pure player in this draft. He will be a 3-4 DE or a 4-3 DT.

Christian Wilkins and Jeffrey Simmons are going to be solid mid-round IDP picks, also very talented interior D-linemen. Ed Oliver is a great real life talent but he’s not really a pass rusher, so what is his upside for IDP? Leonard Williams?

Stay away from Dexter Lawrence, the nose tackle from Clemson. He’s Vita Vea 2.0. A space eater who might get taken high in the draft but probably won’t do a ton for IDP.

Some other DLs to watch: Rashan Gary, from Michigan, could play anywhere from interior DL to potentially outside LB in a 3-4, a la Sheldon Richardson. He’s more raw then people realize, tho.

Zach Allen & Chase Winovich, a couple of white boy DEs who are both big and tweener sized, similar to Tyquan Lewis last year.

Gerald Willis, interior guy from Miami, is a potential top 50 pick.

I have started watching these guys over the past few days.

Ed oliver really impressed me with his use of leverage and strength, pushing the pocket, disrupting, but it worries me some that hu is biggest weakness from what I can see, mediocre hand fighting and use of moves to disengage hasn't gotten all that much better in 3 years. I could see him being a huge upside player if that improved with nfl coaching and see his floor as being an effective dt who will make some plays regardless. The first film I saw of him as a freshman had me really excited, he was already a physical force at that point, and I know he was hurt this year, but lack of improvement worries me some.

Quinnen williams LSU tape was probably the best I saw. Other games I was less impressed by him but if he is a DT he should be very good and even as a 3-4 de I think he will be a valuable player. His versatility really like though when he doesn't get quick penetration he sometimes seems to be content to sit there engaged. Would like to see more consistency.

Rashan gary didn't really impress me yet in the 2 games I have watched. He is seen as a guy who should move inside but is versatile enough to set the edge. He played some of each that I saw and was okay on the edge, but less impressive inside, and didn't seem like a guy who is going to be a dominant edge rusher.

Dremont jones is interesting to me depending on where he goes. Again only watched a couple games in full but also saw him some during the season same with William's and oliver, but in those 2 games he seemed to be the most consistently penetrating of these 4 getting into the backfield at times seemingly at will. His size worries me, and probably makes him scheme dependent and possibly situationally dependent as a worst case but I could see real upside as an interior rusher here in the right situation. He may be the most affected by the draft for me but could see a huge boost
