Trading Offense for Defense

Postby TheBelgian » Tue Oct 02, 2018 8:59 pm

For team in Sig
I'm looking to trade Davante Adams for Roquan Smith or one of the top rookie LBs in a 13 keeper league.

Is it smart to be trading offense for defense? I'm new to IDP and simply looking to gain more knowledge. I've heard the saying that, "No defensive player is worth more than a 1st rounder", is that true?

Would appreciate any input.

Note: Don't worry about salary or points. Salary are the same and WRs and LBs scoring is very similar.

I'd expect a lot more for Davante- maybe another solid wr along with Roquan for Adams.

Generally avoid the offense for defense trade but wouldn't be opposed to a tier 2/3 level offensive player for a upper tier defensive player

When calculating value with offense for defense trades, use rookie pick values as a guide. The top rookie IDP LB's typically start going between picks 14-20 in a balanced idp, non superflex league. For example, Roquan is probably worth a late 1st or a very early 2nd depending on league size.

I think we can agree that Adams is worth much more than a late 1st. So you would probably need to add another mid-late 1st value, which would be either another stud IDP or a guy such as Dede.

Personally, I would keep Adams if I had your roster. You're not incredibly deep at WR and you'll have Deion Jones back when he's healthy.

I probably wouldn’t trade Geronimo Allison for Roquan, please do not do this trade.

Waiver wire LBs seep out of the woodwork every year, and lots of them become top-20 guys. That doesn’t happen with skill positions.
