Looking for a cheap startable safety

Postby problemsolver » Wed Jul 18, 2018 10:24 pm

16 team salary cap league. I need to start 2 S and only currently own Tony Jefferson, Derwin James, Ronnie Harrison.

Took over an orphan, got some rebuilding to do. My roster has holes all over, but the IDP portion of this team was a hot mess. We are doing our FA auction currently. I need a safety i can start on the cheap.

Here is a list of top available FA's (as sorted by own%)

Reggie Nelson
Darian Thompson
Miles Killebrew
Xavier Woods
Ricardo Allen
Ron Parker
George Iloka
Deshazor Everett
Adrian Phillips
Keith Tandy
Kenny Vaccaro

Anyone stand out in this group? Or are they all pretty much the same? And super top secret sleeper safeties out there i can check on?

Vaccaro and Everett are both someone to consider from that list. Killebrew has been disappointing. Giants aren't happy with Darian Thompson and may lose the job opposite Collins. Phillps had a nice run playing S/LB hybrid for the Chargers, but Derwin James squelches his value.

You might also see if these guys are available...

DJ Swearinger- Always seems to be near the ball
Daniel Sorensen- S/LB Hybrid who plays close to line of scrimmage
Marcus Maye- Some say he outplayed Jamal Adams in their rookie campaigns.
Jabrill Peppers- Underwhelming rookie season, but will supposedly play closer to the LOS this year. Has added value as Punt Returner.
Tyvon Branch- He's old (31), but was having a remarkable season until injured in Week 10
Kurt Coleman- He's 30, but a savvy veteran now at the Saints who can score fantasy points in bundles
Quandre Diggs- Slot corner currently listed as a CB in MFL, he was a fantasy gem late last year filling in for the injured Tavon Wilson at S.
Rodney McLeod- Started off slow last season but put up solid numbers in the back half of the season as teams playing from behind were forced to pass.

Hope this helps some and good luck!

From this list I’m taking Adrian Phillips. If he stays with a S designation he should put up decent point totals due to the snaps at LB.
8 team SUPERFLEX, PPR, .2 PPC, 1.5PPR for TEs, 5 point passing TDs, IDP
Start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 FLEX, 1 SF, 1 K
3DL, 4 LB, 4 DB

QB- Rodgers, Wentz,
RB- DJ, Barkley, Kamara, Cook, Mixon, Jamaal Williams, Aaron Jones, Ekeler, Lindsay, Powell
WR- AB, OBJ, Nuk, Michael Thomas, Adams, Watkins, Josh Gordon, Dante Pettis, Doctson, Tyrell, Josh Reynolds
TE- Zach Ertz, Jordan Reed, Hunter Henry, Shaheen
DL- Watt, Donald, Campbell, Griffen, Graham, Irving
LB- Kuechly, Lee, Kwon, Martinez, Hicks, Eric Kendricks, Edmunds, Preston Brown, Hitchens
DB- Landon Collins, Keanu Neal, Poyer, Hyde, Quin, Cyprien

2.02

Thanks for all the work.....unfortunately all these guys are already rostered. Maybe i just need to wait until training camp battles play out and see who starting where.

I'd be taking Phillips first. Derwin James will not take his job. James takes Jahleel Addae's job from 2017 with Addae supposedly playing deep [or on the bench].

Phillips played straight LB for the last 5 games of last year. He could easily not start this year but if he does he's a great own.

After him I don't really want any of those others I'm afraid. They're all part timers or in unoptimal spots.

Is John Jefferson, Justin Simmons, or Jonathan Cyprian already rostered? They may be lower owned players that could put up big numbers this year.
12 team 0.5 pt PPR; 1QB, 2RB, 2WR, 1TE, 2 Flex
QB: Rodgers, Prescott, Lauletta (R)
RB: Gordon, Ajayi, Collins, Yeldon, Ekeler, Martin, Grant, Mizzell, David Williams, Jeffery Wilson, Warren
WR: Cooks, Boyd, Marvin Jones, Lockett, Coleman, Doctson, Goodwin, Cobb, T. Williams, Z. Jones, Roberts, Tate (R), Cain (R), Ellington, Cody Core, Beebe
TE: Kelce, Cook, Conklin, LaCosse
2019 Picks: 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5

12 team 1 pt PPR SF IDP; 1QB, 2RB, 2WR, 1TE, 1 SFlex, 3 Flex, 1DL, 1LB, 1DB, 1 IDP Flex
QB: Newton, Stafford, Bortles, Kessler
RB: Hunt, Mixon, Lewis, Ekeler, Thompson, Bernard, Davis, Blount
WR: Evans, Lockett, Marvin Jones, Sanders, Lee, Pettis, Crabtree, Cole, Ateman, Lasley
TE: Rudolph, Seals-Jones
DL: Jordon, Ingram
LB: Jarrad Davis, Alonso, Avery Williamson, Warner, Van Noy, Golden, Baker, Shaun Dion Hamilton
DB: Poyer, Kazee, Collins, Jenkins, Cyprien

Sorry i let this slip.....i got into a draft in a different league and put this on the back burner. Thanks to everyone who responded. I saw i had a trade offer this morning in this league and it kind of brought it back to the forefront for me.

I give LB Jadaveon Clowney
I get S Josh Jones

I dont know what to make of this. Clowney was LB26 in this league last year and would probably be my LB3 behind TSmith and Woodyard. I do have some depth at LB so this trade wouldnt cripple me, but im still not sure about it. The GB defensive backfield seems like its in a huge state of flux right now. With my luck the day after i make this trade they'll sign Kenny Vacarro and Eric Reid and Jones will be covering punts.

Simmons and Cyprian are owned. I cant find John Jefferson in the MFL player list.

Kindred is available, although he is listed at the third S behind Peppers and Randall everywhere i looked. MacDougal is not available.

So it seems my best options in FA are:

1) Phillips
2) Kindred
3) Dart Throw

Vaccaro will sign, its just where? if he ends up in a good spot he is your best bet. I think Everett is going to be competing with Nicholson this year for playing time. And he wasn't very good to begin with imo. Woods is an unknown dart throw but might be useful. I agree with above Phillips will still play a lot of snaps but will be moved into different positions. Iloka is a last resort if you need to fill a spot. Never scores a ton but is always starting, so there is always a chance.
I only play in 16x53 with 10+ taxi size leagues with full IDP. All are PPR and most value return yardage. So my opinions may be skewed To these deep roster leagues.

Dynasty Fantasy is not a game, it’s a full time hobby.

I think myndflyte was talking about John Johnson above. He's getting plenty of hype [but not someone I'm behind at all].

However - can anyone tell me why they think Kenny Vaccaro will get a job? I don't really get it. He's not a good player and it seems that NFL teams aren't really interested either.

I guess it's possible he gets some cash once the vet guaranteed date passes but that's unlikely to mean a regular, full-time job.

Anyway - you don't really need a 4th safety right now. You'd likely be churning him anyway. Phillips has the most upside. Instead of owning a weekly S4 like most of the guys here you're better off grabbing Kerwynn Williams or Antonio gates or Deatrich Wise. potential big hits are far more attractive than bad depth.
