Beasley back to DE

Postby slaughterrt » Wed May 30, 2018 9:01 pm

When I heard the news about Vic going back to DE, I was hyped because a good DE is harder to find than a LB. In addition, I was thinking that Vic putting up those 15 sacks as a SLB would translate over to DE and I would be getting LB numbers at the DE position.

However, digging into his production since entering the NFL, I’m starting to wonder if him going back to DE is going to automatically translate into top 10 DE numbers. Me thinks no. Vic was never a big tackle stat producer, moreso a big play sack type. But, during his 2015 campaign, as a DE, he only had 4 sacks. In 2016 he moved to SLB and put up 15.5 sacks, and in 2017 (although suffering through some injury) he dropped down to 5 sacks.

Now, certainly it looks like the 15.5 sacks he had in his first year as a LB certainly isn’t the norm, but one would wonder if he isn’t more effective (from a fantasy perspective anyway) playing as a LB. Or maybe the 2016 year was just a one year deal...not sure.

Wondering what the consensus here is, and whether him moving back to DE will be a good thing or a bad thing for his sack production. And whether now would be the time to sell him because of the excitement of him moving back to DE.

He's a freak athlete who still hasn't really developed any pass rushing moves, and he's not big enough to just bull rush people.

I'd still keep him in the hopes that he does develop as a more complete edge player, all the while knowing he at least provides a high weekly ceiling.

Definitely agree his 15 sack season was not the norm. Or anything that we can expect. He was just ridiculously efficient that year.

24.6% of all his pressures were sacks.

In 2017 Chandler Jones [who of course led the league in sacks] hit 22.4%. Demarcus Lawrence 19%. Cam Jordan 18.9%. Yannick Ngakoue 18.6%. Joey Bosa 17.3%. Melvin Ingram 14.5%. Von Miller 12%. Carlos Dunlap 11.1%.

Beasley's 2016 was never repeatable. The change in position simply masked that.

Slight tangent: Does Vic’s move to DE mean Duke Riley should have a starting role? And if so, how do you think he will do?

I'd say he'll be in on base downs.

But I also would expect DeVondre Campbell plays Sam in base but retains his 3 down role.

So for me Riley remains a part time player.

Is there a bigger ghost in the league? The snaps compared to statistical production is quite astounding. I noticed his snap share dropped in Week 9, and while I haven’t seen Week 10 counts, that likely can’t be a surprise. It feels almost crazy, but is this guy even rosterable? 15 team league, 53 man roster with start 2 DE he was just dropped...and nobody is picking him up. Oh how the once mighty have fallen.

Too thin for DE. All a tackle has to do is kick out and get wide and Beasley is shut down.

Beasley just runs upfield, usually ends up 10 yards behind the QB before trying to come back. Takes himself out of the play so much...
