Draft for need vs. best player (offense vs. defense)

Postby Reno McCoy » Mon May 07, 2018 2:12 pm

In general, I tend to draft the best player instead of drafting for need. However, I'm not sure how I should handle that in my current situation for the team in my signature (big play points for defenders).

What you need to know:
  • My next pick is 1.15.
  • I need WR help badly.
  • I doubt my targeted WRs will be available still.
  • But a top 3 QB should be.
  • All defenders will be available (owners in this league don't value defenders as much as they should).
  • My defense is pretty strong with no real needs.
Do you recommend throwing a dart and taking a WR (position of need), picking up a top talent LB (knowing I'm already stacked there), or taking a QB to add depth there?

I think a top LB will be the best player available, but owners in this league don't value defense, which means I won't have as many options for trading as I'd like from a position with solid depth.
16-team salary/contract league (start QB, RB, 2WR, 1TE, 2Flex, K, 2DL, 2LB, 2DB, 1 DEF FLEX)

QB: Foles, Bortles, Brissett, Mullens
RB: Bell, Ingram, Guice, Singletary
WR: Landry, Boyd, Shepard, Allison, Pettis, Kirk, Gallup, M. Brown
TE: Ertz, Everett
DL: Dunlap, Hunter, J. Allen, McKinley
LB: Ogletree, Wagner, Telvin Smith, Devin Bush, Eric Kendricks, Tavai
DB: Reshad Jones, H. Smith, Collins
K: Badgely, Elliott

Take the best WR available, assuming one of: Miller, Kirk, Sutton, Pettis, Gallup is still available.

In a 16 team league, if a top 3 QB is available at 1.15, that would be very intriguing.

I'd hate to reach in the first round on a WR who you don't feel confident will start for you at some point. Many of the WRs available at that point are at a similar level of potential as those who will be available in the 2nd.

Also, I'm not opposed to picking the #1 LB at this point - but in your case it would create a log jam on your roster. If you don't think you can get value later by trading that LB or another, then I guess leave him sit there.

Good luck!

If you need a WR then perhaps you should be trading the pick for a vet WR. Rookies are more hit and miss in their rookie season, especially early doors, so I would not be reaching for one now for two or three years down the line because who really knows what your team will look like then (ww adds/trades/injuries etc). Best future value/production over need for rookies ..... As the IDP players do not command decent relative trade value in your league then I would pass on them if there is no real path to them increasing your teams weekly scoring.

Slight caveat for SFlex/2QB league's where I think QB poor teams should reach somewhat for rookie QBs as you really need as many dart throws as possible until you have 3/4 settled starters.
99 problems but your 10 team league ain't one!

I don't think there is a WR in this class I feel good enough about to draft ahead of guys I have valued higher. I think your QB situation is iffy enough a QB makes sense
I am just a guy sharing some thoughts

Now I'm torn even more. I love LBs, so had been set on that route, but I see the value of going QB or WR (vet if I can get one). I'm one of those guys who undervalues QBs in all leagues, so I haven't even studied them all that much for the draft. Time to compare them to the WRs that are left.

I would have no issue with you taking Roquan or Tremaine at that spot.
