In a Dynasty IDP league and i can't get the hang of the IDP side. Wondering if someone could help me out. I've updated my signature to include my defensive players going into this off season, looking for advice on who I should cut, target in the draft, or try to find on the wire.

A little about the league:
Dynasty
Half point PPR, 1 Point for Tackles, half for assist, and 4 points for sacks
Roster size is 30 with 5 IR spots.
No kickers
Starter spots:
1QB
2WR
2RB
1TE
1Flex
2DE
2LB
2DB
1D Flex

IDP can get a little weird because the scoring is so variable from league to league and designations change depending on what site you use. I assume by your starting requirements that Safeties and CBs are lumped in with the DB label and DTs and DEs are both listed under DE. The IDP 101 post in this subforum is definitely a solid place to get a general idea.

Personally I draft based on scarcity when it comes to IDP, from what I've gathered across a few IDP leagues I'm in the scarcity generally works out like: DT > DE > LB > S > CB. Just like the offensive side there are tiers to every position but where the scarcity comes in is the drop off between each tier at each position. For example with DTs there are 4-5 tier 1 "elite" guys then 6-8 tier 1.5 "high end" guys and after that maybe 15-16 tier 2 "solid" guys and then after that it's more or less a crap shoot as to whether you can find a guy who will put up decent production for you. On the flip side you have CBs where there are 7-8 tier 1 "elite" guys, 20-21 tier 1.5 "high end" guys, and 38-39 tier 2 "solid" guys (Note I'm using a scoring system for a league I'm currently in where tier 1 = 15+ pts/week, tier 1.5 = 13-15 pts/week, and tier 2 = 10-13 pts/week). Obviously this doesn't mean you ignore a top 5 safety to take a top 20 DT just because there's more depth at the safety position but it means you can afford to wait longer to take guys at deeper positions.

Based on your league size, roster size, starting requirements, and the players you have listed in your sig I'm gonna assume there's a fair amount of depth available on your waiver wire. Looking at your team it seems like you've got some solid IDP guys, although injuries derailed you a bit this year, and maybe the issue is not knowing when to start which guys? Your DEs and DBs seem fine to me, for LB Lawson is iffy and Woodyard just had a massive upswing in production and is gonna be 32 next season so maybe look for some youth. Jarrad Davis, Deone Bucannon, and Jon Bostic are all pretty good younger players and it wouldn't surprise me if at least one of them was available on the WW.

PS when I'm evaluating IDPs I like to look for younger guys that have a high amount of real life draft capital spent on them (NFL rounds 3 or higher) since teams are more likely to both give them a longer leash if they don't crush right out of the gate and give them more snaps/playing time which is huge for production. Not only that but when a team spends a high pick on a defensive player in today's league, where QBs/WRs/OL take up a lot of draft capital, I think it really speaks to their talent level. Obviously there are guys like Laron Landry who are complete busts but as a general rule of thumb I think it works out pretty well.

Yeah in my league they have him as a LB/DE. Hes more of a wait and see. He needs more playing time.

You're correct in the lumping of IDP players. Thanks for the input. I'll check the wire and see what's available. Thanks.

In your setup, I might just keep Mosley, Adams, and Dunlap. There should be enough depth in the draft and on the wire that is comparable to the other IDP on your roster.
