Buccaneers safeties

Postby Oslo Oildrillers » Fri Aug 18, 2017 2:25 pm

The TBB safety situation has been viewed as a muddled one all offseason with incumbent starters Keith Tandy and Chris Conte facing competition from JJ Wilcox and 2nd round pick Justin Evans. Tandy and Conte aren't exactly the most celebrated safeties so a lot of people expected Wilcox and/or Evans to come in and knock them away rather quickly, but throughout the entire offseason and first couple preseason games there is no doubt that Conte and Tandy are the starters. Of the two Tandy is the one that climbs into the box and lines up to cover TEs 9 out of 10 times, with Conte keeping back on most plays.

Given the production we have seen from TBB safeties in recent years, and Tandy himself having some monster games at the end of last season, I'd go and grab Tandy if you have space and he can still be found on waivers. In my leagues he is currently available in 7 out of 16 leagues, and most of these are pretty deep leagues, so people still seem to be confused by that whole situation.

Evans was taken in the 2nd round so I would think he's not going to ride the bench for too long, but while Evans is a physical player and can play in the box he is a bit undersized and he's got range and ball skills that could land him at free safety rather than strong safety. JJ Wilcox has so far seemed to get most of his snaps at nickel corner.

I think Tandy can be a cheap and highly productive player, at least to start the season.

Bought into him at the end of last season and have high hopes for him going forward. Coaches are all saying how prepared and well he knows his stuff which will keep him on the field.

Good stuff Oslo

Tandy, Mo Alexander, and KJ Dillon were the safeties I was buying for cheap or free 6 months ago. Looks like the first 2 will pay off! Now let's see if Dillon can get the starting SS gig for the Texans

By the start of the season? No chance. He still hasn't grasped the playbook and he's made some blunders in the preseason games because of it, along with a couple missed tackles. He has also only learned the free safety position so far so they haven't started cross training him yet. Wilcox is clearly ahead of him.

That being said he's a second rounder so I'm sure they have high expectations for him, but it might take a little while. So far he's not exactly ahead of the curve.
