IDP Newbie Auction Startup Advice

Postby Kramer » Mon Jun 19, 2017 12:14 pm

Doing an auction startup right now (team 2 in sig). We have a 10 team league with two flex spots for IDPs only. I've never played with IDPs before, so didn't have too much of an idea of who to grab.

Here is the scoring (it's tackle heavy):
1/2 Sack - 2
Blocked Punt, PAT or FG - 3
Each Interception - 4
Each Fumble Recovered - 2
Each Fumble Forced - 2
Each Safety - 2
Assisted Tackles - 0.5
Solo Tackles - 1.5

Top ten scorers under these settings last year:
1. Kwon Alexander - 206.5
2. Landon Collins - 206.5
3. Zach Brown - 195.5
4. Bobby Wagner - 195.5
5. Christian Kirksey - 180
6. Alec Ogletree - 178
7. Zachary Orr - 175
8. Paul Posluszny - 172
9. Telvin Smith - 171
10. Johnathan Cyprien - 169

So far the following players are off the board:
Jamie Collins, CJ Mosley, Myles Garrett, Jason Pierre-Paul, Vic Beasley, Jaylon Smith, Michael Bennett, Harrison Smith, Dont'a Hightower, Telvin Smith, Landon Collins, Jadeveon Clowney, Von Miller, Joey Bosa, Luke Kuechly, Taco Charlton, Kwon Alexander, Khalil Mack, JJ Watt, Alec Ogletree, Bobby Wagner

Here are the players I'm considering targeting in no particular order:
Lavonte David, Vontaze Burfict, Sean Lee, Denzel Perryman, Jerrell Freeman, Benardrick McKinney, Ryan Shazier, Christian Kirksey, Lawrence Timmons, Eric Kendricks

Who order should I target the guys I listed (or someone else if I missed somebody worth grabbing)? How many should I grab to be okay with bye weeks and injuries and such based on your experience? Any other advice? Thanks in advance for your help!

So, you only start 2 IDP's (regardless of position)? If so, Im not convinced I would invest much more than the minimum to fill those spots. You are targeting LB's (which is great) but you will find TONS of talent on the waiver wire throughout the year. Of the guys you mentioned, I would probably avoid Perryman and Kendricks. Do not pay a premium for any IDPs giving this scoring set up though. Also, Jatavius Brown (the other LB on the Chargers) is a guy I would much prefer to Perryman...and honestly, I would make Brown a target if I were you (especially if you can get him for cheap). I think Jared Davis will potentially put up some big numbers also (based on what Whitehead did last year and what previous MLBs have done there in previous years). But, I really want to stress that you should not feel the need to get into a bidding war for any players with those starting requirements.

My mind is a little blown that Taco was already taken with this set up.

I also only mentioned Davis as a fall back guy really...besides Perryman and Kendricks...I would take everyone else you listed over him (well, maybe not Timmons).

Yes, we only start two regardless of position. Kind of silly if you ask me, but it is what it is. We're at the end of the auction draft where no one really has any money to bid on anyone anymore. So it's $1 to get who you want now. I have 9 more players to pick up and have $10 left, so I'll be investing the minimum in this position. I let everyone else invest in IDPs so far (JJ Watt went for $20..) and figured I could get decent options even if I waited. I'll focus on the list I mentioned and the players you added as well (Brown and then Davis late). Are there two or three players that stick out from the list that I should nominate first so I don't lose my chance at them?

In a tackle heavy league, I really like Kirksey. If you were to pair him with Shazier (if he could just stay healthy), Lee (who finally did stay healthy), Brown (potential to be a monster, needs to stay healthy) or McKinney...all for cheap, that would be really nice in my book. I would pass on L David...he just hasn't produced fantasy numbers the past few seasons.

Note, i own Lee, Shazier and Brown, haha...so I may be a bit biased.

Ultimately, when the season starts, really pay attention to the wire and snap counts for those players...LBs getting 90+% of the snaps and putting up solid tackle numbers early on tend to stay that way throughout the season.

Hahah, I'll keep that in mind...I figure if I can get 4 or 5 of the guys I listed/you told me about and work the waiver hard, I should be more than fine with how the rest of my team is setup. Thanks for the help...I'll post an update later on.

I was able to nab:
Navarro Bowman, Christian Kirksey, Sean Lee, Benardrick McKinney, Ryan Shazier

I could still get Votaze Burfict instead of one of these guys. Should I grab him and if so, who should I drop for him or should I drop a player from another position (Donell Pumphrey probably)?

Gerald Hodges could be a top 10 IDP in 2017. I've been on a small island beating the drum for him.
Just a guy who loves fantasy football - specifically defense.

Is he worth grabbing in this format since we only start two IDPs? I'll keep an eye on him and pick him up if he gets to a hot start maybe.

I think you did really well. I do like the idea of grabbing Burfict as he typically racks up tackles. I (as do others on here) have some concerns with Bowman this year (but I could also see him go back to being his typical tackling machine self). Any chance you could flip Bowman for a late rookie pick and scoop up Burfict to replace him?

Somebody grabbed Burfict just now, so that's a no go. And I don't know if I'll be able to get any picks for any of these guys right now as the whole league took defensive players as I mentioned in the OP and could've had any of these guys but passed on them. I might have to wait until midseason until people see more value in these guys. I could probably easily find replacements for them, so I'm going to try to get as many draft picks as I can. If not 1sts, I think 2nds for them should be good too from what I've briefly read about IDP leagues and the fact that we don't start too many.
