Need to drop 1 more player

Postby Dyno_7 » Sat May 27, 2017 10:09 pm

Ok, I'm probably over thinking this, but I'm a bit torn between two players I believe will have excellent seasons. I have to trim my roster down to 27 and the two players I'm deciding between are Kamalei Correa & Nick Perry.

My league uses ESPN and Perry was given the dual designation of LB/EDR which makes him DL eligible. So he basically went from worthless, to a huge value. His stats in 14 games last season were 52 total tackles & 11 sacks. This basically puts him in the same range as my other DL stud, Danielle Hunter. Add the fact that Julius Peppers left GB, Clay Matthews is getting older, I think Perry should be a lock to repeat or exceed his 2016 numbers.

On the other hand, the WILB spot next to CJ Mosley has been an excellent position for IDP tackles. Daryl Smith had great numbers as well as Zach Orr last season. Is there any reason to suspect Kamalei Correa won't follow suit?

Which player would you keep & why?

Well the rumors about Correa stepping into a 3-down ILB role are just that - rumors. They're not crazy rumors, but they're still based on speculation. The same rumors swirled LAST summer as well, before Orr locked down the job. There's a legit chance Correa stays on the bench this year, or continues getting groomed as an OLB.

Now, as to Perry, I definitely wouldn't expect him to be a lock to match last year's numbers. His sack totals last season were pro bowl caliber. Similar to Erik Walden & Lorenzo Alexander, 2016 will almost certainly go down as the best season of his career (not that that's a terrible thing), but he could still be a solid starter IF your league rewards sacks heavily, which it apparently does.

Trade Correa on the positive news. It could get worse.

Perry is a natural edge rusher. Great hip bend, fluid enough to get low and maintain balance and showed some good hand placement. Pretty sudden movement player, in a sack heavy league he's a nice asset although I much prefer "traditional tackle" LBs.

I will see if I can trade Correa to someone. My league has more LB's available in the draft than DL, and I believe Perry has a good chance to build on last season's performance. For 3 seasons he only averaged about 350 snaps. Last season he eclipsed 600. With Peppers gone, I'd be surprised if he doesn't hit at least another 600 snaps in 2017.

My league scoring is balanced, but with Perry getting the EDR designation, I can play him as a DL. As an OLB he's worthless, but as a DL, he can put up competitive numbers.

Thanks for the responses everyone!
