Waooow hadn't been on the Forum in a while and didn't realize this thread took a life of it's own!!

After reading all the inputs, I do agree that scoring adjustment seems like the right way to address this issue.

Thanks for explaining the downside of this quite clearly.
The act of players getting yards and touchdowns to help your Fantasy team’s score accumulate is all luck.
The acts of acquiring players and choosing which ones to start is all skill.

But Mack is definitely a DE in a 4-3, and definitely an OLB in a 3-4.

Beasley is a rare pass rushing specialist who plays in a 4-3, yet is still a LB.
My hope would be that he has the designation of OLB if he spends >50% of snaps rushing passer, and LB designation otherwise.
Yes! It is the number of rushing snaps vs coverage snaps that should matter in how LBs are classified as rush-OLB or as LB.

A 3-4 outside linebacker will typically either become a base DE or an SLB in a 4-3. If the team does not demand size at DE they might end up using the player at base DE, if deemed to small for DE the player becomes a situational rush 4-3 DE or a base 4-3 SLB who plays on the line in sub-packages - either as a 3-4 rush LB, nickel DE, or LEO depending on the different fronts used in sub-packages.

Khalil Mack was a base 4-3 SLB, the same position Vic Beasley plays. But it's not even a hard rule that these type of players end up at SLB in base, Von Miller was a 4-3 WLB in the early part of his career even if the larger majority of his snaps was spent on the line of scrimmage.

We all know what these players are, they're pass rushers, but since we're using the 25-30% of time defenses are in base defense to determine positions, rather than looking at which position they play 70-75% of the time, we're stuck with this erratic system. It might make sense if there was a huge difference between 4-3 and 3-4 defenses, but with the way pretty much all defenses are turning into hybrid defenses it makes very little sense to be clinging on to these old ways of determining player positions. Look at any interview with a defensive coordinator or head coach over the last couple of years when asked about their defensive scheme, and they'll all talk about how defining their defense as 3-4 or 4-3 and finding players to fit that scheme doesn't really matter any longer since it's a sub-package league where defenses implement both 3-4 and 4-3 concepts, and there are very few 3-4 defenses that run a traditional two gap scheme.
I wish I could write like you. Nailed it every time.

Why not just have LB, DE, DT and EDGE designations with multiple spots for each in starting lineup? I don't see that as devaluing it to the extent you are mentioning...but, I have not given it the thought that you have. Most OLB's would likely be listed as LB/EDGE where as most DE's would probably be listed as DE/EDGE.

Or would this not work?
I suggested this awhile ago....as baseball does it. Make it so a commish can choose to turn on/off multi designations. I think it would be interesting, but not to the degree that it waters down another position....don't need 2'positions like CB in IDP.

Tonite i'm exactly thinking the same.

I've seen Chandler going from a 4-3 DE postion to 3-4 OLB and it seems that here we go again for the return at the former position...

Liuget has been moved from 3-4 DE to 4-3 DT

Brockers from NT to 3-4 DE...

I had Taco, Barnett, Gholston, Fowler at DE and Brockers, Jernigan at DT. Now i've 5 DE and 1 DT...And i could have 6 with Chandler with less LB since the A.Williamson trade.

For me it shouldn't be anymore DT/DE/LB but Edge/DL/LB now. The DE/OLB could be used in the three designations for consequence and let us the choice instead of constantly trade, draft, cut, waive etc...As much go in the shortest way.

In waiting i'm totally avoiding a DT with 3-4 DE ability...or a DE too heavy who could be moved inside...or a DE with too much coverage abilities and who could be moved as an OLB ^^

If MFL does it, it's the first thing i will claim in my dynasty offseason change rules. But something has to be changed. There is a reason all those guys change every year. Because of scheme changed and because they are polyvalent. And for some of them they are used differentely during the same season. It's even more than an evidence so. Let them in a unique designation is insane for me and totally opposite to what is the NFL right now. NFL has changed quickly, so should do the fantasy.

I think a better idea is to balance scoring so a good edge lb can be a lb1. In my one league for instance where Chandler Jones was the top lb last year while most lb1s were off ball guys they are somewhat capped by tackle numbers and to really have a game changing dominant season you need sacks. This makes a balance between safer off ball guys and higher upside rush lbs

This is what we did. QB hits, Tackle for Loss etc...Chandler finished #10 with 202 points. So a guy with 50+ tackles and 15+ sacks becomes great. He made 34 QB hits last year = 68 points. 28 TFL = 28 points. Almost half of his scoring. In my argues, one of the most important point is the fact it changes every year. If you know he'll stay LB, you can count on him. No problem. But if you trade another LB and he moves himself at DE, the position is suddenly empty. But i know that wherever he is on the field, he will be now very valuable with this scoring. New rules made OLB better in LB designation equaling the tackles machines. For DE, guys who don't get to the sack but are regular hard worker, it closes the gap too. Just a management frustration of rosters.

I would argue that if all that season gets him is 10th he is not worth the risk of owning if priced the same as similar level off ball lbs. Because there is inherent risk with an edge lb, both in less consistent play and in position changes I think that needs to be rewarded with higher point upside. For instance if the value of investing in him as a top 10 lb is that he may outscore the too off ball lbs by 20 of he has another great season, probably worth it. If a great season just gets him in the mix give me the off ball guys all day

I'm doing a new IDP startup sal cap league, and I'm using the PFF position designations of DI, EDR, and LB.

Of course, MFL is the only site that can handle a league of my complexity, and they don't use those positions. So I am manually changing player positions so that DI = DT, EDR = DE, and LB = LB.

Here's the list of players I've changed so far. Still need to figure out and move the incoming rookies.
