Myles Garrett... Commitment to the game concerns?

I'm gonna preface my thoughts with this: I almost NEVER let a player's interview influence my thoughts on that player, similar to the way that I won't listen to glowing coach speak.

That being said, my ears DO perk up when I hear something concerning. And some stuff about Myles Garrett has me concerned about how his NFL career will be.

He talked in an interview with ESPN about how he wants to break all these rookie records, be the best player in the NFL, etc (all the things one might expect the #1 overall pick to say). He then clarified that he doesn't plan on breaking CAREER records, because he "won't be playing that long". He wants to focus on his other diverse interests.

Now I have no problem hearing that he has diverse interests. I love that he's into paleontology & oldies music. But he is so bent on making sure that everyone knows he's more than just a football player. And as much as that's the healthy attitude to have as a human, that's honestly not the right attitude to have as a professional athlete. At least, not one who is expected to be a generational talent.

If I am a Browns fan, I would have some serious reservations about rooting for this guy to be my team's future cornerstone on Defense.

While it's some what concerning, if he plays in the league for 6 years and is somewhat dominant then I think he's worth it.

I agree and I am mostly talking about him from a real life football perspective, not so much for IDP purposes. I'm sure I won't be owning him anyway, if he goes as high as I think he will

It does give me reason for some concern as a fantasy owner. One of the criticisms of him is his level of effort on some plays. He is so physically gifted that he can be great in college without being focused. In the NFL, that rarely occurs. So I wonder if he has the internal desire it requires to be great at the NFL level.( I would love to have him on my team, I am saying this in the context of the hype surrounding him and the price it will take to draft him.)

Hmmm... interesting. I've been watching some tape on him and thought I'd be more impressed. I liked Derek Barnett's tape alot more. I trust the experts more than my amateur eye, but this was my impression.

Barnett is a more skilled pass-rusher, period. But Garrett is much more athletic AND has better size, and thus has the higher ceiling for the NFL. Your eyes did not deceive you!

I'd question my commitment too if the Browns were going to draft me.
