Everyone is treating rookie contracts like they're really something to talk about. That's looking at a small picture. If you're a legit talent and have aspirations of setting the world on fire, you look to the real contracts and how to maximize them.

Stop treating the rookie contracts like they're anything more than chump change in the bigger picture.
You're ignoring the fact that for many of these prospects, their rookie contract may be the most they'll ever make, if they are busts or severe disappointments.

Tunsil has already proved that he is gonna make a truckload when he gets to negotiate his worth. The NFL is full of players that have more than four years' service.

You have to remember how indestructable you felt at 21yrs old. These young bucks are aiming for the Hall of Fame. They're not thinking they will fizzle... and many of them don't. I get the addage "take what is given to you", but we are in a more conservative place in our lives.

Don't discount the many external forces (agents, family members) that are influencing many of these guys' decisions. I keep seeing opinions about what these players think, say, etc. There is way more going on than just what these players think.

Bruiser wrote: Mon Apr 24, 2017 6:44 pm Idk, I'm reminded of Laremy Tunsil posting a video last year and getting drafted to his #1 destination in Miami (so did Myles Jack). Don't forget that these college students are very unique in that they don't get to choose/apply for their first job. They are 22yr olds that are told where to go. They don't like it anymore than you or I would, so don't discount their ability to 'whisper to the wind' and guide their own ship (or their agents' influence).
It's interesting that you would think that he'd guide his ship to Miami, seemingly costing him $10 million dollars after you factor in the state income tax savings. Tell a 22 year old that he'll lose out on $10 million and see where his ship guides him.
$10 million out of how much (I don't know the answer)? Tell a 22 year old "You get 50 million if you play at *crappy place*, or 40 million if you play where you want". Dude would be like Damn, $40 million is a ton of money, but Crappy place is still a crappy place!
How much? Well the rookie scale salaries/contracts are pretty much set. He went from $25 mil down to $10 mil. At least he doesn't have to pay state income tax, which would have cost him a few mil somewhere else. I'd say the difference between $10 mil and $20 mil is pretty significant. Doubling your net worth but what do I know?

I'd say that Tunsil is on track for a contract that pays $15M/yr. His success is tied to the people around him. He likely doesn't get there in certain cities.

Everyone is still looking thru a fantasy football lense. Look to the business side for your dynasty implications.

Not looking through a fantasy football lends, but I'll let you believe you are correct because this discussion is a waste of time and killer of multiple threads since it started coming up. Let's focus on the players again.

Took the plunge on him in my Return Yardage league. If he can carve out decent DB totals, the Return Yardage could bring him to the top tier of DB. If he can be more defensively, or adds a few Offensive stats, he could be an elite option. Not a fan of him from a pure on the field talent, but for fantasy I decided to roll the dice. Feel pretty good about it.

I agree and also took the plunge late. I think his upside is very high. In IDP, opportunity can trump talent...and he will certainly have plenty of opportunities.

Worse options usually are cheaper...that's not a new concept. I bought Peppers where i was comfortable with, not reaching, and frankly he wasn't even in my line of vision until two picks prior, at which point the upside came to light. I could draft Adoree Jackson as the last pick in my draft, but I still don't think the upside is the same. If you do, then we're looking through difference lenses. CB required leagues perhaps, but this is not one of those.

I'm not saying to reach for Peppers, but at a certain value, his upside is undeniable given the potential defensive role, Special Teams, and even a handful of offensive plays. You can't deny he's impressive with the ball in his hands, even if you aren't high on his defensive talent.

Peppers should be talented enough to earn a starting gig, but crappy enough in coverage to play in the box like Cyprien. That sounds fun to me!

I am in a return league. I have a deep young team and took Peppers with 3.08, Samuels at 4.04, and Adore Jackson at 5.04 in 10 team league.

These were my last three picks after taking Corey Davis, Jamal Adams, John Ross, and Evan Engram previously. I have a pretty balanced team that has been also deficient in returners the last few seasons. So I reached, but if I did not grab them then I was stuck again scraping the waiver wire for (Returner Onlys like Lucky Whitehead, Lance Dunbar, etc.).

Other deeper round, KR/PR eligible players are are: Eddie Jackson CHI SS, Switzer DAL WR, Brandon Wilson CIN CB
Mine was an extreme case, but reaching for Peppers in the 3rd round is not crazy. He could be the next Prime Time or Devin Hester...look at Tyreek Hill Last year...this is what makes it fun! Good Luck

That's why drafting is so much fun. How great is it when someone makes a wild (in your mind) pick and you think "ha! what a sucker. Gimme player x!!" Lol love when that happens.
