Rookie Draft With IDP: Help Needed

Postby ThatGuyBrian » Mon Apr 10, 2017 9:20 am

This is my first time involved in a rookie draft that includes IDP players and I need some help figuring out when to start drafting the IDP rookies. Currently I have these picks 1.01, 1.03, 1.04, 1.08, 1.09, 1.10, 1.11, 2.06, 2.12, 3.04, 3.06 3.08, 4.01, 4.04, 5.01 and 5.12. This is a complete rebuild and unfortunately these players are already on teams due to the devy draft (fournette, cook, watson, davis, mccaffery, shuster, and williams). Team is in the signature, and I still working on adding picks but not sure which player I have would bring value and what that value would be.
So I am asking for help.

Targets:
1.01- Mixon
1.03- Howard
1.04- Engram (I like the idea of having my tight end situation solved by having these two players. At this point in time I don't see any WR that I would want more than Howard or Engram)
1.08- WR
1.09- WR or BPA
1.10- D'Onta Foreman
1.11- BPA
2.06- Garrett or Foster

after that everything is pretty much BPA

I literally would not even consider IDPs in your rookie draft, unless a Foster or Garrett falls to the late 3rd or something. LBs & DBs are like RBs in that they should be the final capstones of a solid contending team. They shouldn't be cornerstones of a rebuild.

Really? Well I need upgrades at numerous Def positions and there a quite a bit of players that can help and I would hate to miss out on players like garrett and foster by waiting on them. Should I move the 2.06 pick and get two third round picks out of it? I should be able to get all the offensive players that I want in the first round.

DBs and LBs are highly replaceable by waiver wire types in even the deepest leagues. That's why I don't ever recommend drafting the big names or paying for them in trades/startups.

DL is a different story, as the best DLs in real life are also the best ones in fantasy (most of the time), so it's not a position where you can just grab a startable guy off waivers (unless it's start 1 or 2)

Top IDP in my leagues (mostly 15-16 teams) will start to go off the board in the mid-teens, and ramp up in the 20s. The fact that 7 of the top players are already out of contention would push this up for me. That being said, your offense is either old (RB) or just not proven or good. I'd still try to focus on the best offensive players wherever possible. If you want to reach for Garrett, I don't have an issue, but I wouldn't wholesale start taking IDP with your team for a while, and in fact would likely just trade the picks for devy picks or more young talent.

Well I currently have seven first round draft picks and will obviously be targeting offensive players (Mixon, Howard, Engram, a QB, possibly a couple of WRs). With that said I would really like to get a defensive at pick 2.06. Could that pick be used for a player like Garrett or would picking Reuben Foster be the better pick? Another possibility would be to trade the 2.06 for later picks or possibly even a devy pick?

I have a lot of questions because I am still trying to learn how the IDP players fit into the rookie draft.

As a side note and based on your roster, I would Highly recommend sneaking Corey Davis in at the 1.03 assuming the guy with the 1.02 takes Fournette, and wait on Engram until the 1.08.

I would like to but he was already selected in the devy draft along with every other rookie that I would love to have (fournette, cook, williams, davis, shuster, mccaffery, and watson). Trust me with all the first round picks that I have, the team would have been well on the road to recovery if those players were available.
