2016 Rookie IDPs

Postby JJDubya » Sat Nov 21, 2015 4:15 pm

Alright guys, there are a host of threads dedicated to the offensive rookies. I generally don't get my rookie review on until the NFL season is over (I need something to do during the offseason), so figured I'd try to get a cheat sheet going for those of us that aren't as keen on the college game.

How strong would you say the projected incoming class is? This was the year of the pass-rusher, are there some run-plugging MLBs this year. I didn't get much in terms of the high-end MLBs (Anthony, Kendricks, etc.) or the pass-rushers like Beasley or Fowler but I've got a bevy of picks in one of my leagues and wanted to know who to start looking at. If you have an opinion/ranking, please feel free to post. Only guy I really know much about is Bosa. Who else you got as some of the top talent for an IDP league, and where would you take them in your drafts?

Love Bosa. I'm sure you've seen enough of him. Ogbah at ok state is pretty raw but is oozing with upside. The Buckner kid at Oregon has looked good at times. And the Oakman kid at Baylor is really, really raw, but has a lot to like. Robert Nkemdiche will be an interesting one to watch and see if he gets the DT or DE designation, depending on if your league requires a DT. Also, the I really love the Robinson kid at Alabama if you use a DT.

For LBs, I like the Reggie Ragland at Bama. Mosley's successor at MLB. Jaylon Smith might be the first LB taken in the draft, but will probably play olb so take your scoring into consideration. Also like the Floyd kid at UGA, but he could fall into that DE/OLB dilemma.

At Safety, love Jalen Ramsey at FSU... but there is a chance he could be switched to CB.

I'm sure I left a lot of names out, just tried to give you a few to watch.

Another name to look at:

Carl Nassib, DE, Penn State - currently leading the FBS with 16 sacks. Brother of Ryan Nassib (NYG backup QB). Was a walk-on as a freshman. This is his senior year, and his first year starting.
The standard is the standard.

This area is my sweet spot, but unfortunately my first semester of law school has drastically reduced the amount of time I was able to spend watching football. If nobody else elaborates before , I'll have more in a couple of weeks when I get out on break.

Nice. 1L is stressful, but awesome at the same time. Where's school and what are your plans going forward? I'm a Canuck practicing in NYC, so feel free to hit me up with any questions etc.

Thanks man, I really appreciate it. And it's the Campbell University School of Law. It's a 3rd tier school, but it has the highest bar passage rate in North Carolina over the past 10 years (including Duke). Outside of NC, it's relatively unknown but this is where I plan to practice so I thought it was a good fit. And im not 100% sure yet, but possibly leaning crim defense, might try and work in some sort of sports and entertainment one summer as well.

Myles Jack
Jaylon Smith
Reggie Ragland
Joey Bosa

I haven't heard too much about premium safeties so far....maybe Su'a Cravens but I think he may end up a LB.

Jack is a monster. If Smith ends up as an ILB then I put him right with Jack.

As for Ramsey, I have always felt like the Safety position in general is devalued based on the availability of so many options. I typically target guys in the late 3rd to 4th rd. All 5 of my consensus "top10" dynasty safeties are either guys I picked up off the wire or drafted in the 4th. It may be different in other leagues. But I would be hesitant to spend anything higher than a 3rd.

I agree that spending anything above a 4th on a DB is silly, and I wouldn't even use my 4th round draft capital to do that. 5th round when things are bare or waiver adds. There are simply better spots to focus on.

I want to see where the Big 3 LBs end up (Ragland, Jack, Jaylon). I want to understand the type of role the latter two will have before I spend on them, even if I am a big fan of both.

In my opinion he's an entirely different player. Beasley is on the small side, I think he was listed at about 240 when he came out. Beasley is more of a speed guy. Both he and Fowler have elite short space and first step quickness. Both rely on athleticism more than Bosa. While Bosa is a good athlete, I think he converts speed to power better than Beasley. He's also about 6'6"..... I'm sure I'll catch flack for this but he reminds me of Michael Strahan.... or maybe a Jared Allen, although I think he will be better against the run but not quite as good against the pass as Allen.

I haven't seen Bosa as much as those two guys, but based purely on draft hype and what I've read it seems he'll be the most highly regarded of those three, but I can't get a feel of how much more that will in terms of dynasty IDP.

With Bosa I'm basically trying to figure out if this a really good DE prospect or an elite one that may warrant reaching for a bit in rookie drafts. There sure seems to be some developing momentum on what his upside might be and talk of him possibly going #1 overall.

Is Bosa more Jared Allen or Justin Smith?
